William "Wil" Myerson was a comic book artist who started impersonating Rorschach in his old age. He was killed along with Laura Cummings when the two tried assassinating the presidential candidate Gavin Turley.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Wil Myerson was born and raised in Kew Gardens, a neighbourhood in Queens, a borough of New York City. As a child, Myerson read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and came to dream of the monster from the story. As a young adult, Myerson still lived with his parents.

Becoming a Comic Book Artist[]

In the 1960s, Myerson became a comic book artist so that he could dream and create but instead he was tasked with drawing vapid cartoon animal comics in a crowded studio. On the 15th of September of an unknown year, his pirate character Pontius Pirate debuted in Astonishing Suspense #15. The character was a smash hit and went on to become a major franchise.

On March 13th, 1964, Myerson was having dinner with his parents when they heard the screams of a woman named Kitty Genovese being raped and murdered. Myerson's father didn't call the police and instead shut their apartment's window so they couldn't hear it, telling his son that it wasn't their problem. Wil would carry the guilt for not helping her for the rest of his life, which was possibly the impetus for his obsession with Hannah Arendt's philosophy of civic duty.

Living in Lewis Tower[]

Myerson eventually moved out to the Lewis Tower apartment building. He once went on a date his neighbor Alma Adler who found him boring and awkward. As he asked whether he could kiss her while going back, she answered "no" and he promptly understood that she wasn't interested in him. Though she kept a friendly relation with him, he became more introverted after the incident. Alma soon married a man named Carl Thompson, who would often tease Wil about his awkward date with his wife in jest. Myerson however talked little and eventually retired as a mainstream comic book artist.

Chestertown Séance[]

In 1974, Myerson visited the house of legendary comic book writer Otto Binder to participate in a séance alongside two comic book fans named Randy Cox and Frank Miller. After the séance was completed, Myerson had a conversation with Miller where they agreed that they didn't hear anything on the tape recorder that Binder believed contained his daughter's voice. After the séance Myerson was sent a copy of recording of the séance by Binder who thought that the alleged recording of a ghost speaking contained the name "Wil".

Later life[]

After 1974, he rarely went outside his room, though he continued to make comics for a small audience. He continued living in New York along with Alma (whom he was still secretly obsessed with) and Carl after the squid attack orchestrated by Adrian Veidt. Some people who were aware of his work would come to see him and he would mostly dismiss them politely, though at times he would get annoyed.

In 2020, Wil started writing threatening propaganda against the conservative politician Gavin Turley after learning about his presidential candidature. It was around this point when Myerson began corresponding with Laura Cummings, a 19-year-old fan of his comic The Citizen and the Unthinker.

Over the years, he had become frustrated at Carl endlessly poking fun about his past date with Alma, even though it was meant to be a friendly ribbing. After he snapped at him, the two got into a brief scuffle and Carl went after him to beat him up. The building's manager went to check on Myerson and found him lying bloodied on the floor in his room. He however told him to leave him be, rejecting a suggestion of going to the hospital.

Laura visited Myerson, while he was working on the newest issue of The Citizen and the Unthinker, and the two embraced. Wil was convinced over time by Laura that he possessed the soul of Rorschach. This belief led to Wil purchasing a Rorschach mask from a Halloween store and wearing it at all times. Wil and Laura, dressed as Rorschach and The Kid respectively, broke into Carl and Alma's apartment, resulting in Carl suffering a fatal heart attack. Wil spared Alma, though she decided to move out of her flat.

Living on the Clark's Farm[]

Attempted Assassination of Gavin Turley[]

Laura and Wil attempted to assassinate Turley during a convention, however a mysterious caller alerted the security about the duo.

Myerson successfully took down several members of Turley's security when they came after him, however he was soon forced to hurry back to Laura after hearing the United States Secret Service blast a nearby wall. The two would-be assassins were soon shot to death by Turley's bodyguard Jacobs. The Federal Bureau of Investigation faced problem in identifying Myerson initially due to him not having any driver's license and his face being damaged due to bullets. After identifying who he was however, the private investigator hired by the Turley campaign found that Myerson's fingerprints mysteriously matched with that of the real Rorschach.

Trivia[]

  • Wil Myerson is based on comic book writer Steve Ditko, the creator of Spider-Man and the Question, the later of whom became the basis for Rorschach in Alan Moore's and Dave Gibbons' graphic novel Watchmen. Wil’s philosophical beliefs, however, are completely flipped from Ditko’s with Myerson being inspired by the works of left-wing philosopher Hannah Arendt, not right-wing philosopher Ayn Rand.
  • The name Myerson is a patronymic Jewish surname that originates from the German, Dutch, and Jewish name Meyer.
