The Watchmen was a vigilante team that followed in the generation after the Minutemen. They were disbanded by the Keene Act of 1977, but reunited one final time to stop one of their own from committing mass murder eight years later.
Formed in 1962 by Ozymandias, the idea of the Watchmen was initially dismissed by the Comedian, who simply called it a joke. However, the team, including Comedian, stayed together as one fighting unit until the Keene Act of 1977 forced them to retire.
- The Watchmen is based on the Crimebusters from the graphic novel.
- The film version of the costumed adventurer meeting is led by Ozymandias. Captain Metropolis is not present. Much like in the graphic novel, the notion of another costumed adventurer group is ridiculed by the Comedian, however unlike the graphic novel, in the film it seems largely implied that the group stayed together even beyond the meeting, actually working as "The Watchmen" together, as opposed to the Crimebusters in the original series, that never came together after the meeting.
- Somewhat like in the comics, "The Watchmen" might have just been an informal name applied to the "second generation of costumed vigilantes" operating in the 1960s and 1970s.
