The Sundance Labs is a network of art colleges founded by Hollywood actor turned United States president Robert Redford.
History[]
The Sundance Labs was established by Robert Redford in 1981 with the original purpose of serving as a foundation for independent filmmaking. However, with Redford's entry into politics in 1986, the institution transformed into a network of art colleges, and Redford divested from its operations.[1]
One of the notable colleges within the Sundance Labs network, located in Los Angeles, California, played a crucial role as an incubator for several protest rock groups, including Rage Against the Machine, Body Count, and Hiroshima Lovers. These groups emerged in response to the conservative policies of the Nixon and Ford Administrations.
By 1993, the optimism generated by Redford's successful presidential victory[2] over Ford in 1992 catalyzed a shift in the institution, reflecting a renewed sense of optimism.
Following 1993, Redford maintained a deliberate distance from the Sundance Labs to avoid any allegations from political enemies that he was leveraging the institution to promote his political agenda within the cultural sphere. Nevertheless, his unwavering commitment to the arts remained a cornerstone of his administration.[1]
Redford has expressed no intention of resuming an active leadership role within Sundance Labs after leaving office. Instead, he will be too occupied with the construction of his presidential library along the Blackfoot River outside Missoula, Montana.[1]
Trivia[]
- Sundance Labs is based on real-life programs from the Sundance Institute, a non-profit organization founded by Robert Redford in 1981 committed to the growth of independent filmmakers, theatre artists, and composers from all over the world. The Sundance Labs are not art colleges, however, but rather they provide focused training and support for artists.[3]
