Roy Victor Chess was a delivery driver for Pyramid Transnational and a hitman hired by Adrian Veidt to arrange an assassination attempt on his own life in order to throw off Rorschach's investigation into Eddie Blake's death.
Biography[]
An employee at Pyramid Transnational had been ordered to unknowingly hire Roy Chess, who also worked at Pyramid, to assassinate Adrian Veidt. The employee left Chess a brown envelope containing money and pictures of Veidt in his locker. Chess unknowingly became a part of Veidt's plan to throw off Rorschach's investigation into Eddie Blake's death.
While Veidt hosted a meeting with Lee Iacocca and several business executives at his office complex, Chess came out of the elevator and began firing shots at Veidt. Veidt evaded his attacks and instead shot his secretary in the leg and her hand, as well as two of the business men in the head and the chest including Iacocca himself before being disarmed. Veidt ran over to him to seemingly interrogate him, and fed him a poison capsule to make it look like a suicide, and to secure Veidt's public image. Following this incident, Rorschach broke into Chess' apartment to investigate.
On November 1, 1985, Rorschach and Nite Owl II interrogated the Pyramid Transnational employee at Happy Harry's Bar & Grill who revealed the story to them. He protested that he didn't know Chess was going to attempt to assassinate Veidt, and that he demanded protection.
