Mesmerism for the Masses is a book by W.C. Florentine that teaches people how to use mesmerism.
History[]
In 1938, Will Reeves as Hooded Justice raided Fred’s Original Market in Queens discovering the first clues to Cyclops’ plan. After taking out a group of Ku Klux Klan members, he discovers a copy of the book Mesmerism for the Masses lying next to a map of the United States East Coast.[1]
Through a series of investigative pursuits, Reeves discovered that Cyclops was using mesmerism as a form of hypnosis to turn black people against one another using projectors, after one incident in Harlem, in which a woman described herself as being hypnotized against her will to attack an entire theater full of African Americans.[1]
As Reeves gets revenge on the people who hung him from a tree and treated him less than human, he sees someone recording a video with their conspiracy's intent. After lighting the Cyclops' compound on fire and making his escape, he makes sure to take one projector for himself, surely learning how to master the concept of mesmerism for his own use.[1]
Trivia[]
- Mesmerism is a real psychological method, also known as Animal Magnetism. It was developed by an 18th century psychologist named Franz Mesmer, and involves taking over someone or something using a trance state; where traditional hypnosis would involve some sort of words, sound, or prompt ("You are getting very sleepy"), Mesmerism uses little or no words to prompt its trance state. Hundreds of books were written on the subject between 1766 and 1925, but it is almost entirely forgotten today. Mesmerism is still practiced as a form of alternative medicine in some countries, but magnetic practices are not recognized as part of medical science.
