Trivia[]
- The title of Manhattan Shrugged is based on Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.
- The title is a reference to Doctor Manhattan, the lone superhero believed to be a god in the series who like the Titan of Greek mythology, Atlas, holds the world on his shoulders. The significance of this reference in Atlas Shrugged appears in a conversation in which Francisco d'Anconia asks Hank Rearden what advice he would give Atlas if "the greater [the Titan's] effort, the heavier the world bore down on his shoulders". With Rearden unable to answer, d'Anconia gives his own advice: "To shrug".
