During the Vietnam War, the USS Maddox was attacked but Johnson ordered no response. The Comedian's company, who looked forward to more funding and reinforcements, staged a second attack against 2 US destroyers, which was blamed to the Vietcong. Johnson ordered the military to take action, and airplanes attacked gunboats and facilities in North Vietnam in reply. Giving a speech to the American people, Johnson requested Congress to pass a resolution to take all necessary measures. This further escalated the Vietnam War.
