History[]

World War II[]

Attack on Pearl Harbor[]

On December 7, 1941, Japanese aircraft bombed the United States base at Pearl Harbor taking the United States Navy completely by surprise and claiming the lives of more than 2,300 troops.[1]

Atomic Bombings[]

At the Potsdam Conference of July-August 1945, Harry S. Truman, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin discussed the ongoing war with Japan, where Churchill and Truman acquiesced to Stalin as they needed the Soviet Union's cooperation in the war against Japan. Heavy casualties sustained in the campaigns at Iwo Jima and Okinawa as well as fears of the even costlier land invasion of Japan led Truman to authorize the use of the atomic bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early August.

The massive loss of civilian life incurred in the atomic bombings in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki resulted in Japan's official formal surrender. On August 10, the Japanese government issued a statement declaring they would accept the terms of the Potsdam Declaration, and on September 2, Japan's formal surrender was accepted, thus bringing an end to World War II.[1]

World War II[]

Invasion of Iwo Jima[]

The United States Army invaded Iwo Jima during World War II as the first attack against Japanese territory, in order to use the island as an advanced post in the impending invasion of the Japanese mainland.[1] Eddie Blake was involved in this campaign and planted the American flag following their victory against Japan.[2]

Miss Jupiter[]

On August 6, 1945, Paul Tibbets and Robert A. Lewis piloted the Miss Jupiter to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.[2][3][1]
