World War II[]
The United States Armed Forces invaded Iwo Jima during World War II as the first attack against Japanese territory, in order to use the island as an advanced post in the impending invasion of the Japanese mainland.
The Comedian was involved in this campaign and planted the American flag following their victory against Japan.
