Cherenkov Radiation[1] is electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle (such as an electron) passes through a dielectric medium at a speed greater than the phase velocity (speed of propagation of a wavefront in a medium) of light in that medium. Jon Osterman is known to emit this type of radiation following his accident inside the intrinsic field chamber, transforming into Doctor Manhattan.

History[]

HBO Timeline[]

On November 3rd, 1985, Doctor Manhattan transported Cartwithen Castle to Europa. The teleportation left behind a massive crater along with irradiated Cherenkov-Glass soil found either directly from the voided foundation of Cartwithen Castle, or within the estimated radius (150 meters) of the teleportation event, which came to be known as Blue Sunday.[2][3]

In 1997, a geological survey at "The Crater" is conducted by the International Institute of Extraspatial Studies. Scientists concluded that the Crater is contaminated with Cherenkov-Glass Radiation - the unique energy signature of Doctor Manhattan. Thus, the Crater becomes a worthless tourist trap.[2]

Trivia[]

  • Cherenkov radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation. The characteristic blue glow of an underwater nuclear reactor is an example of Cherenkov radiation. It's named after Soviet physicist Pavel Cherenkov, who shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics for its discovery.
  • The Glass in "Chernekov-Glass" is a reference to Milton Glass. Glass sponsored Doctor Manhattan after his rebirth and, when pressed by a journalist for a quote, he said "God exists, and he's American".[4]
