Calvin Jelani was a construction worker living in Saigon until his death in 2009. With no family to claim his body, Jelani's identity was taken by Doctor Manhattan for his new human form.

Calvin Jelani was born in 1983.
Jelani moved to Vietnam for work at Pyramid Global Construction but ended up unemployed in April 2009. On November 20, 2009, Jelani died of a heart attack at his home. With no family or next of kin to claim his body, Jelani's identity was taken by Doctor Manhattan for his new human form, allowing him to date Angela Abar in public.

- When crafting Jon Osterman's new identity as Cal Abar, Angela changed his birthday to November 22, 1976. November 22 was the day and month that Jon Osterman rematerialized in the Gila Flats cafeteria, having transformed into the being that will later be known as Doctor Manhattan.
- Furthermore, he had a father who suffered from heart disease and Alzheimer's. Calvin himself had a tonsillectomy at some point.
