Betty Lewis is the younger sister of Byron Lewis.

Biography[]

Betty Lewis was born in 1919. She grew up in Bethlehem, Connecticut along with her older brother Byron. On December 24, 1927, she and brother were sent into town by their mother to pick up a smoked ham for Christmas. Whatever money was left, they spent it on licorice, crayons, and drawing papers. Their father came home and was not happy with them from spending their money on such trivial things. The following day, she learned that her father lost her job, much the dismay of her and rest of the family.

Betty married a man named Jack, and had at least two girls with him. Jack died while serving in military, leaving her to raise the children on her own.

Byron's public career as a costumed adventurer caused Betty, and the rest of her family, a great deal of stress. In 1962, she ceased communication with Bryon following his mental breakdown and voluntary admission into the Fitzgerald Mental Home in Maine.

Betty would receive letters from her brother, expressing his guilt and regret for the mistakes he made. In June 1974, Bryon wrote to her informing her of an inheritance that he received from Nelson Gardner following his death. She was soon contacted by an estate lawyer named Frederick J. Charles and received a check for $10,000 as a gift from her brother. Although she doesn't respond to his letters, Betty would keep every letter her brother sent to her.

In November 3, 1985, Betty received another letter from her brother hoping that she and her family survived the squid attack on New York City. In a moment of guilt, she finally responded to her brother and sent him flowers to assure him of her current status.

In 1992, Betty received one final letter from her brother following his death, leaving her in tears.[1]
