When Doctor Manhattan abandoned Earth for Mars on October 20, 1985, deterrence breaks down, and the Soviet Union, emboldened, invaded Afghanistan.[1] A global nuclear war loomed which is only averted when the contending powers come to believe that the Earth is threatened by aliens, thanks to Ozymandias' ambitious hoax.[2]

- In the real world, the Soviet Union did in fact invade Afghanistan in December 25, 1979, which started the Soviet–Afghan War.
