- Methane ignition inside of the Union Pacific Coal Company Hanna Mine #1 results in a violent explosion and a mine cave-in, resulting in the deaths of 169 miners, while 46 survivors narrowly escaped the disaster.[1]

- The Union Pacific Coal Company Hanna Mine #1 explodes again, trapping 18 miners. As the state mine inspector and 40 rescuers entered the mine, a second explosion occurs, killing all 59 inside.[1]
