Robin Hood
Robin Hood used to go around during the early 50s stopping bank robberies. When he was done tying up the robbers he would then rob the bank himself and give the money to the citizens who had been held hostage by the original robbers. Many would actually sort of anticipate a bank being robbed in hopes of winning some cash.
Robin Hood was investigated by the FBI in 1953 due to suspicions of him being a communist. They didn't find any proof of red influence behind Robin Hood but they did uncover a tiny little secret.
Robin Hood was behind the initial robberies in the first place. Him and his goons would go around initiating bank robberies, then Robin Hood would come in to 'save the day' where he would then dissipate the cash among the citizens inside the bank (some of whom were goons of Mr. Hood himself) all while secretly keeping a cut for himself. They would then vacation in luxurious places like Paris or London or the Caribbean for a couple of months before staging another robbery and repeating the whole process over again.
Robin Hood was promptly arrested and sent to prison for 25 years. He was very adamant about his name not getting out (some suspect he had ties to the mob) so in 1978 he was put into witness protection. Nobody knows what ever happened to Robin Hood but there are rumors that he snitched and made out with a decent deal with the government. Supposedly he died sometime around 2001-2003.
In 2009 a film named Public Heroes was made about Robin Hood's exploits featuring Johnny Depp as the masked enemy/hero himself.
